Summary of Position
Provides technical mechanical service in the maintenance and repair of landfill and recycling equipment, including wheeled, tracked and stationary equipment, as well as fleet vehicles across multiple sites. Responsible for diagnosing and correcting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems, including rebuilding or replacing engines, transmissions, and other systems, and performing preventative maintenance on equipment.
Work is performed under the direction of the designated supervisor.
Position Responsibilities
- diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in a shop and field
- reads and understands equipment schematics, parts catalogs and cross-reference part numbers
- ability to use the Cat Service Information System (SIS) for maintenance, troubleshooting and service information for the repair and maintenance of Caterpillar equipment.
- repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces worn or damaged parts such as, but not limited to, wheels, tracks, filters, gears, hammers, seals, cutting edges, valves and hoses
- operates heavy equipment for troubleshooting and relocation to shop such as dozers, scrapers, excavators, haul trucks and tracked loaders, in compliance with the Agency’s operating safety policies and procedures
- performs routine preventive maintenance
- performs welding as required
- ability to work on current diesel engine emission systems
- diagnoses and repairs air conditioning and heating units on equipment
- provides technical assistance to operators on primary maintenance and repairs
- responsible for shop tool inventory
- operates Agency service (mechanic) truck with attached crane for mobile on-site service and repair of equipment
- orders necessary parts and supplies
- performs daily tasks each day that include time records and related reports
- adheres to all safety and housekeeping rules
- performs assigned work as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Two-year degree in diesel mechanics or equivalent work experience
- Experience: One year of heavy equipment operating experience and minimum six months experience as a journeyman-level mechanica valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with air brake endorsements
- ASE certified to handle air condition or equivalent
- must provide own hand tools ($300 annual tool allowance paid in July)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- must possess good customer service skills
- knowledge of safety rules and accident prevention practices
- ability to troubleshoot/diagnose problems and/or system failures and the ability to diagnose, replace, and/or repair any unit on equipment as required
- work involves regular standing, walking, crouching, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and the usual and customary carrying of objects up to 70 lbs. Occasional pulling of heavy objects up to 150 lbs
- normal hearing and vision, with or without correction
- ability to walk and stand on various surfaces, including concrete and uneven and slippery terrain for prolonged periods; ability to work from platforms and step ladders
- knowledge of the mechanical and related operational characteristics of heavy equipment and occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions used in equipment operation
- ability to carry out operational tasks independently
- basic mathematics in completing time and operational reports
- ability to read, write and clearly speak numbers, letters and simple sentences
- competency and proficiency in the diagnosis and repair/replacement of engines, components, accessories, power trains, suspension systems, and other mechanical, electrical, electronic and related parts
- proficient in operating a wide range of equipment and tools, including mechanical hand tools, various garage equipment, diagnostic tools and instruments, cars, trucks, bulldozers, end loaders, sweepers, forklifts, hammer mill operational equipment and other Agency equipment.
- capacity to acquire technical information about problems and procedures from manuals, diagrams, and general experience
- ability to explain equipment repair techniques by verbal communication, demonstration, and supervised practice
- ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public
- perform work in an environment with numerous undesirable conditions including noise, dust, fumes, and exposure to moving parts and equipment
