Phlebotomist
Iowa City Free Medical Clinic
Part-time, hourly position; Monday evenings, Tuesdays and Thursdays (we hope to have one person do all three shifts, but would consider splitting this among two people).

· Up to 15 hours per week
Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for accurately and efficiently drawing blood samples from patients in a compassionate and professional manner. This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Patient Interaction:
- Greet patients warmly and establish rapport.
- Clearly explain procedures and answer patient questions.
- Reassure anxious patients and provide comfort during the blood draw process.
- Blood Collection:
- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures using aseptic technique.
- Select appropriate collection tubes and equipment based on test requirements.
- Accurately label and store blood samples.
- Deliver blood samples to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at end of service
- Quality Assurance:
- Adhere to strict infection control and safety protocols.
- Follow established procedures for specimen handling and transportation.
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records.
- Laboratory Support:
- Assist with laboratory tasks as needed, such as processing specimens and running basic tests.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Oversee inventory management
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification: Current phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Experience:
- Proven experience in laboratory procedures, techniques, and specimen collection within a clinical or hospital setting
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture (blood draws), blood sampling, and specimen processing
- Excellent patient service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately
- Skills:
- Spanish, Arabic or French fluency highly desired but not required
- Strong technical skills in venipuncture and capillary puncture.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail 1 and accuracy.
