The City of Cedar Rapids is looking for a Solid Waste and Recycling Supervisor to plan, coordinate, and supervise the activities of solid waste and recycling collection.

About the Position:

Oversees the operations of garbage, bulky item, special haul, recycling, yard waste/organics and loose leaf vacuum collection programs.

Position Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm; Rotating weekends and holidays
 

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of the solid waste and recycling collection
  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations
  • Examines and modifies collection routes as required.
  • Tracks, monitors, and analyzes solid waste, yard waste, or recyclable performance metrics and data 
  • Monitors new advances in refuse, organic and recycling systems and collections
  • Investigates and mediates customer complaints concerning solid waste and recycling collection
  • Monitors assigned budgetary activities
  • Operates various vehicles and equipment and conducts ongoing job-site inspections
  • Tracks inventory of materials and equipment; determines needs to purchase equipment; provides assessment of specifications for proposed new vehicles, truck bodies and equipment
  • Assists in the preparation of bids and requests for proposals for the purchase of recyclable materials and services
  • Monitors transportation safety regulations, local, state, and federal regulations and law requirements and assures division’s compliance
  • Recommends and plans special projects for solid waste, yard waste and recyclable collections; oversees and assists with neighborhood clean-up services
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalency and
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience Solid Waste & Recycling collection and processing or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Experience driving a heavy truck and mechanical experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with air brake endorsements and valid Medical Examiners Certificate

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience in a union environment highly preferred
