GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Kirkwood Community College is seeking a part-time Mass Media faculty member to teach a variety of Mass Media courses. We are looking for instructors to teach at the Main Campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as well as at our Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa in Coralville, Iowa. The Mass Media instructor will primarily be teaching our introductory-level class, MMS-101: Mass Media under minimal supervision.
 
There is a strong possibility for the instructor to teach additional courses in subsequent semesters.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize and teach curriculum in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi for Mass Media courses.
  • Effectively teach in various delivery formats, primarily in person.
  • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught.  
  • File a current copy of the syllabus and provide a course syllabus beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
  • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, counselor, Financial Aid, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.

  • Send or submit your course syllabi to the office staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
  • Attend to your Kirkwood email each weekday.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

The position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.  Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A conferred Master’s degree by date of appointment from an accredited institution with:
    •  At least 18 graduate in a combination of Mass Media, Media Studies, Digital Media, Journalism, Television Production, Communication, Marketing, or Public Relations
    • At least 6 of the 18 graduate hours must be in Mass Media, Media Studies, Digital Media, Journalism, or Television Production
  • Important note on alternative qualifications: to teach applied mass media courses, such as production or broadcasting courses, instructors must possess at least a bachelor’s degree and professional tested experience equivalent to 6,000 hours. 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Familiarity or experience with teaching at a community college.
  • Experience teaching or training others in mass communication, journalism, digital media, news reporting, and writing
  • Significant graduate coursework in communication, journalism, mass media, and digital media
  • Coursework in college teaching.
