GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, Kirkwood Community College is seeking an instructor to teach a Composition II course this Spring semester that runs 1/16/2024 through 5/8/2024, with the possibility of additional sections in the future. The class meets Tues/Thur. from 7:45am-9:15am at our Washington County Regional Center (Washington, IA) campus.
 
The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize and teach Composition curriculum in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
  • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught.  File a current copy of the syllabus at the beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
  • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, Student Academic Support Coordinator, counselor, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.

  • Send or submit your course syllabi to the office staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
  • Attend to your Kirkwood email each weekday.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

The position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.  Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A conferred Master’s Degree by date of appointment with at least 18 credit hours in English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Familiarity or experience with teaching college writing at all levels.
  • Graduate coursework in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Instruction of Writing.
  • Experience teaching college composition at all levels.
  • Writing center or teaching experience at a community college.
  • Coursework in college pedagogy.
