Senior Application Developer- Epic Referrals

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Application Developer to provide leadership for the project team enhancing and supporting Epic Referrals software for patient referral and prior authorization workflows, as well as enhancing and supporting Epic Cadence software.

Core job duties include:

  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and technical support for the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of patient referral and prior authorization systems.
  • Provide technical support for the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of patient scheduling systems.
  • Collaborate with application owners and stakeholders to identify critical functional requirements for new or revised applications.
  • Develop technical design and procedures for new or revised applications.
  • Lead the review and analysis of system problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans associated with system development, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Develop standards for documentation to ensure recovery capability, as well as satisfactory and stable performance of the platform(s) and all applications and processes.
  • Provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff that configure applications, write program code or scripts.
  • Wearing a pager and providing some 24x7 on-call support.


Pay Grade:

Salary: $65,000 to commensurate – Paygrade 5B

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes, typically 5-7 years for Senior Developer in leadership roles including experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies (e.g., Caché, SQL Server)
  • Experience contributing to the support, configuration and development of at least one healthcare enterprise application or area of functionality
  • Experience working with end-users to define system requirements and understand business needs
  • Experience working with vendors to analyze system and integration requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting patient scheduling, referrals, and prior authorization systems in an ambulatory clinic or hospital setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with any of the following healthcare workflows: patient scheduling, referrals, prior authorizations
  • Epic certification related but not limited to the following:  Epic Referrals, Epic Cadence, Epic Referrals, Epic Prelude
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
  • Proven ability to write application test scripts
