Lead Application Developer

Position Summary:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Lead Application Developer to provide leadership for the project team enhancing and supporting Workforce Management software applications.

Core job duties include:

  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and technical support for the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of a Workforce Management software applications
  • Partner and collaborate with HCIS divisions and ITS in the development, configuration and ongoing maintenance of Workforce Management systems and infrastructure to support University and UIHC requirements and information accurately.
  • Collaborate with application owners and stakeholders to identify critical functional requirements for new or revised applications.
  • Develop technical design and procedures for new or revised applications.
  • Lead the review and analysis of system problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans associated with system development, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Develop standards for documentation to ensure recovery capability, as well as satisfactory and stable performance of the platform(s) and all applications and processes.
  • Provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff that configure applications, write program code or scripts.
  • Wearing a pager and providing some 24x7 on-call support.

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes, typically 7-10 years for Lead Developer in leadership roles including experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies (e.g., Caché, SQL Server); experience in the management of team members (functional or administrative)
  • Experience acting as the primary contact for the support, configuration and development of at least one healthcare enterprise application or area of functionality
  • Experience working with end-users to define system requirements and understand business needs
  • Experience working with vendors to analyze system and integration requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • Extensive experience with the following; Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services(SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services(SSRS), Oracle, Web Services
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting a Workforce Management Information System in a healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with human resources practices and workflows including time and attendance, staffing and scheduling, payroll, and accounting
  • Extensive experience in web application development (C#/.net, Java)
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
