The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) is seeking experienced technical professionals as a Network Architect, Voice Technologies within the Technical Operations division. HCIS provides and supports information and communication systems and technology that facilitate quality patient care, progressive medical education, and innovative research. HCIS services University of Iowa Health Care by providing comprehensive, high level support for patient care delivery, internal and external communication, technology innovation, medical education, and research. Creating and maintaining a positive, productive, and rewarding environment for information technology and communication staff. 


This position will work cross functionally with entities throughout the University of Iowa and UI Health Care organization in the design, implementation, and support of voice and network services. This position will lead and/or play a critical team member role in strategic voice infrastructure initiatives in support of Communication and Collaboration applications and services throughout the enterprise. This position will function as the technical lead in direct support of University of Iowa telephony architecture and services to include, but not limited to, Skype for Business, Session Border Controller, Cisco Call Manager and other communication technologies. Duties include:

  • Serve as a communication technology subject matter expert as well as demonstrate leadership/mentoring qualities and a “Can Do” attitude on a team of engineers.
  • Review, innovate, design, plan, implement, and troubleshoot core telephony and other communication systems and services for the enterprise while adhering to standard change management protocols.
  • Participate in enterprise voice and network architectural standards reviews, new technology evaluation, and process review discussions.
  • Participate in and/or lead large scale multifunctional projects with a focus on delivering enterprise business solutions
  • Collaborate with application and communication system owners to ensure their voice communications requirements are realized.
  • Build relationships and work closely with internal and external customers and constituent groups to translate business requirements in to technology solutions

Pay Grade:

Salary: $82,000 to commensurate – 6B

Education Required

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Experience Requirements

  • Experience (typically 10+ years) supporting communication systems, voice/data networks and infrastructures at an enterprise level
  • Demonstrated experience engineering communication technology solutions (data and/or voice network services) from inception through production implementation at an enterprise level.
  • Demonstrated in depth communication technology (data and/or voice network services) problem solving and root cause analysis experience
  • Demonstrated experience engineering, implementing, and supporting IP Telephony, VoIP, and other real time communication technologies at an enterprise level
  • Knowledge of the OSI model, industry best practices, and design/configuration standards for communication technologies and services
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments with a strong focus on customer service. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience leading, mentoring, managing projects and engineering staff
  • Knowledge and experience with QOS, VoIP, Unified Communications, PBX, and/or SBC technologies
  • Experience with wireless, mobility, and/or RTLS technologies
  • Experience reading and interpreting voice and/or data sniffer traces
  • Knowledge of and experience with IPV6, VRF light, and/or MPLS technologies
  • Scripting experience to include Perl, Python, SOAP, REST, unix shell scripting
  • Experience with voice/data communication electronics management tools
