Position Summary:
UI Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) is seeking an Application Developer to act as an analyst in the design and/or modification and configuration of complex clinical application systems.

This position is responsible for in-depth knowledge of assigned Epic System software related to Anesthesia applications; routinely performs in-depth analysis of system configuration and technical issues associated with the use of Epic software; is responsible for design, build, testing, and maintaining Epic System software solutions.

This person will work in partnership with the Anesthesia Informatics team, Epic, Subject Matter Experts and Health Care Information Systems to support strategic planning, daily operations and assist with technology planning in an effort to maximize user and organizational effectiveness.

Core job duties include: 
  • Organize and direct assigned Anesthesia and HCIS IT related staff to fulfill project needs. Work in partnership with HCIS, Anesthesia and other related personnel to assess needs and set IT project priorities.
  • Lead clinical and IT resources through the design, build, implementation, validation and maintenance tasks as required to support standard and customized Anesthesia needs. Oversee system integration efforts and work to optimize existing setup.
  • Develop an operational understanding of critical systems, workflows and policies. Participate in the design and testing of new workflows. Participate in the restructuring of existing workflows as required to enhance application abilities and integration and meet regulatory standards.
  • Maintain an operational understanding of the systems, tools and policies associated with Anesthesia regulatory/governing bodies and reporting registries.
  • Maintain skills in data manipulation and reporting. Be able to work effectively with non-IT staff to gather reporting requirements. Generate and maintain application level reports. Utilize Excel as needed to process data and produce reports. Validate all data produced independently and with subject matter experts. Provide data to the internal and external reporting sources.
  • Provide overnight/weekend on-call support and weekday help desk support as assigned by HCIS.

Position Qualifications:

Education Required: 
Bachelor’s in Computer Science or MIS or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Experience Required: 
  • Experience in the development, configuration and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance healthcare workflows processes
    • typically 3-5 years for an Application Developer role including experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies  
  • Experience supporting the configuration and development of at least one healthcare enterprise application or area of functionality
  • Experience working with application owners and/or vendors to define system requirements, integration requirements and understand business needs
  • Demonstrated ability with converting business requirements into functional/technical specifications for complex integrated systems build
  • Demonstrated ability using tools for customizing vendor application software
  • Demonstrated ability communicating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff at the verbal, written and presentation levels
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desirable Qualifications: 
  • Experience with any of the following workflows: anesthesia, procedural and surgical services, ambulatory/inpatient nursing, or physician documentation
  • Experience supporting device integration in a perioperative, ambulatory or hospital setting
  • Epic certification related but not limited to the following: Optime, Anesthesia EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
  • Proven ability to write application test scripts
  • Experience working with HL7 interfaces
