This job supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by performing a variety of technical and clerical duties under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The Ambulatory Pharmacy Technician II assists pharmacists in ambulatory settings with patient follow-up, primarily via the phone. This position is responsible for managing clinic referral processes, ensuring timely routing of lab results and healthcare provider requests to the pharmacist, and initiating patient assistance/prescription medication insurance requests.  The Ambulatory Pharmacy Technician II is also responsible for retrieving data from the electronic health record system, appropriately triaging phone calls, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring timely completion of daily tasks. This position must interact and maintain effective relationships with patients, pharmacists, clinic staff, and other internal and external partners. 
Job Duties
  • Responsible for intra-departmental communication and promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. (This includes working in different pharmacy department areas (e.g., HPCC, Inpatient, Employee Pharmacy, Hiawatha) as necessary to meet patient care and business needs.
  • When directed by the pharmacist, collect the results of patient self-monitoring testing (including capillary blood INR testing). May also collect additional information (e.g., details of diet and activity, medication use and doses, side effects, etc.) as directed by a pharmacist.
  • Documents all appropriate information accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of and complies with pharmacy policy; and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the practice of pharmacy.
  • Keeps work area clean, neat, well-organized, and continuously flowing.
  • Submits prior authorization paperwork for patient insurance.
  • Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages in a friendly, prompt and professional manner.
  • Routinely reviews work queues and in-basket messaging for timely follow-up.
  • Assists in patient scheduling, when necessary.
  • Accurately and efficiently documents within the electronic healthcare record.
  • Facilitate effective communication with a diverse population of patients and pharmacists, primarily via telephone or electronic record to support patient care.
  • Demonstrates a general understanding of different insurance carriers (including Title 19 and Medicare) and their eligibility requirements.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to operate basic computer applications.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, computer skills, organization, time management, attention to detail and the ability to remain poised and efficient in a fast-paced environment.
Professional Experience
  • At least 18 years of age, required
  • Twelve months of pharmacy experience, preferred.
  • Community and hospital pharmacy experience, preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Diploma, preferred.
  • Associates in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), or Bachelor of Science (BS), preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners as a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Technician Trainee prior to the first day of employment required.
  • Nationally certified by an accredited technician certification board sufficient to qualify for IBOP Registration Status, required. Currently accredited boards are the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Valid Drivers License required.
  • Must meet insurability requirements for purposes of utilizing Mercy vehicles - must be at least age 18 required.
  • Must provide and maintain a good driving record, documented at hire, by a copy of a Motor Vehicle Record.

  • Medium: Exert 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 10-15 lbs. of force frequently
