Cedar Rapids/ Linn County Solid Waste Agency is looking to add a Mechanic to our team! 

Duties:

  • Provides technical mechanical service in the maintenance and repair of wheeled, tracked and stationary equipment and fleet vehicles at multiple sites.
  • Responsible for diagnosing and correcting mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems including rebuilding or replacing engines, transmissions and other systems and performs preventative maintenance equipment.
  • Operates a wide variety of equipment used for conducting Agency operations, facility construction and maintenance.
  • Complies and enforces federal, state and local disposal rules.
  • Operates at multiple sites for the Agency.

Work is performed under the direction of the designated supervisor.
 

Position Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in a shop and field
  • Reads and understands equipment schematics, parts catalogs and cross reference part numbers
  • Repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces worn or damaged parts such as, but not limited to, wheels, tracks, filters, gears, hammers, seals, cutting edges, valves and hoses
  • Operates heavy equipment for troubleshooting and relocation to shop such as dozers, scrapers, excavators, haul trucks and tracked loaders in compliance with the Agency’s operating safety policies and procedures
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance
  • Diagnoses and repairs air conditioning/heating units on equipment
  • Performs welding as required
  • Provides technical assistance to operators on primary maintenance and repairs
  • Responsible for shop tool inventory
  • Orders necessary parts and supplies
  • Performs tasks each day that include time records and related reports
  • Adheres to all safety rules and keeps the shop area clean, orderly and in a safe condition
  • Performs assigned work as required

Minimum Qualifications
Education:

  • (2) year degree in diesel mechanics or equivalent work experience

Experience:

  • (1) year heavy equipment operating experience and minimum (6) months experience as a journeyman level mechanic
  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with air brake endorsements
  • ASE certified to handle air condition or equivalent
  • Must provide own hand tools

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess good customer service skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot/diagnose problems and/or system failures and the ability to diagnose, replace, and/or repair any unit on equipment as required
  • Work involving regular standing, walking, crouching, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and usual and customary carrying of objects up to 70 lbs. Occasional pulling of heavy objects up to 150lbs
  • Normal hearing and vision, with or without correction
  • Ability to walk and stand on various surfaces, including concrete and uneven and slippery terrain for prolong periods, work from platforms and step ladders
  • Knowledge of the mechanical and related operational characteristics of heavy equipment and occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions used in equipment operation
  • Ability to carry out operational tasks independently
  • Basic mathematics in completing time and operational reports
  • Ability to read, write and clearly speak numbers, letters and simple sentences
  • Competency and proficiency in the diagnosis and repair/replacement of engines, components, accessories, power trains, suspension systems, and other mechanical, electrical, electronic and related parts
  • Capacity to acquire technical information about problems and procedures from manuals, diagrams, and general experience
  • Ability to explain equipment repair techniques by verbal communication, demonstration, and supervised practice
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public
  • Perform work in an environment with numerous undesirable conditions including noise, dust, fumes, and exposure to moving parts and equipment
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods and materials used in Integrated Solid Waste Management
  • Knowledge of safety rules and accident prevention practices
  • Skill in operating the following equipment and tools: mechanical hand tools, variety of garage equipment, tools and instruments, cars, trucks, bulldozers, end loaders, sweepers, forklifts, hammer mill operations equipment, and other Agency equipment

Schedule: Monday-Friday (6:30am - 2:30pm)
Location: Site 2, 1954 County Home Rd, Marion, IA
Hourly Wage: Starting hourly wage- $28.27
