Preparation, Experience, Skills:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of mid-range truck and/or bus mechanic experience.
  • Ability to do basic mathematic computations
  • Ability to understand instructions (written and oral) and technical manuals.
  • Ability to get along with others
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to supervise and delegate tasks according to the needs of the District
  • Maintain a valid Iowa Drivers License appropriate for all district vehicles including required endorsements and restriction removals
  • Maintain an Iowa Department of Education School Bus Driver’s Permit
  • Maintain a driving record satisfactory to the District and the District’s insurance carrier
  • Ability to recognize and perform job tasks with a minimum of supervision
  • Willing to work varied hours as needed

Principle Duties:                  
  • Ability to diagnose and repair defects in the District owned automobiles, vans, busses, and grounds equipment
  • Assist in ordering of parts and maintaining accurate inventory records
  • Gather and maintain information and record data essential to maintaining vehicle maintenance records
  • General maintenance and overhaul of District owned vehicles to include sub-assemblies and accessories, including but not limited to the following:
              •Engine tune up - diesel / gasoline                   •Engine replacement
              •Transmissions - manual and automatic         •Cooling Systems
              •Major engine overhaul                                      •Exhaust Systems
              •Electrical systems and schematics                  •Steering units
              •Front and rear suspension                               •Hydraulic units
              •Welding                                                                •Body repair                            
              •Seat repair                                                           •Tire maintenance
  • Perform emergency road service
  • Serve as substitute bus driver            
  • Clean and maintain transportation facilities                          
  • Other duties as assigned

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have ability to complete all assigned tasks independently.  Must be able stand, walk, kneel, bend, squat and climb stairs and ladders frequently and/or for extended periods of time to carry out routine duties.  Must have ability to lift, push, pull, grasp, hold, and/or finely manipulate light to heavy objects.  Must be able to regularly lift, move, or push items of 75 lbs such lifting/moving heavy parts and equipment.  Lifting items heavier than 75 lbs with the assistance of lifts/two-wheeled carts or multiple people. Must be able to bend arms, torso, legs and neck.   Must be able to drive for extended period of time and have ability to use feet for repetitive motion consistent with operating assigned vehicles.  Must have sufficient strength and agility to assist riders with ingress and egress during normal transportation and in emergency situations, sufficient strength and agility to assure student is placed in and is utilizing appropriate restraint devices, sufficient strength and agility to protect students from harm by themselves or others.  Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must have ability to withstand inclement weather conditions. Must have ability to withstand moderate noise levels from tools, equipment, vehicles and students, and maintain intense concentration while performing multiple tasks and avoid excessive mental or emotional fatigue Must be able meet multiple demands from several people, and interact with the public and other staff.

Noise level is quiet to loud. Work may be indoors and/or outdoors. Work may be in non-air conditioned rooms. Tobacco and alcohol-free environment. Fast-paced atmosphere with constant contact with staff and the public. May include evenings.
