The University of Iowa Laundry Service provides a wide range of laundry and linen support services for Campus. A large portion of the work accomplished at the Laundry Service is in support of the Healthcare and Health Sciences Colleges and Departments. The Laundry Service has been a service department at The University of Iowa since 1890. What began with washboards, wooden wash and rinse tubs, and clotheslines has become one of the most technologically advanced institutional laundries in the nation.

This position is responsible for the maintenance for all laundry equipment and to keep it in good working order. Routing maintenance as well as emergency repairs requires that the person in this position have a good working knowledge of industrial-sized laundry equipment. Individual will also be responsible for purchasing parts and services and coordinating Facilities Management services as well as outside vendor services. Knowledge of equipment computer displays and syncing of software programs is essential. This individual will complete daily operation of complex laundry equipment, boilers and general building maintenance.

Duties Include:
  • Installs, repairs, replaces and calibrates complex laundry system equipment and supports systems, such as compressed air, 450 lb washers and dryers, conveyer systems and various other specialized equipment for cleaning patient linens. 
  • Locates problems in systems by monitoring the functioning, interpreting computer display readings and conducting performance tests over a period of time for mechanical laundry equipment and systems.
  • Works with other maintenance staff to complete scheduled repairs.
  • Maintains extensive preventive maintenance schedules for laundry equipment and systems.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for employees

License Requirement:
Valid Driver’s license is required and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety driving Standards.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
  • Six years of experience in electrical or control trade, including apprenticeship; or graduation from a two-year resident instrumentation and controls program.
License Requirement:
  • Valid Driver’s license is required and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety driving Standards.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Two years experience installing, inspecting, maintenance and preventative maintenance on industrial equipment
  • Two years experience troubleshooting and programming microprocessor controllers on laundry and/or industrial grade equipment
  • Two years training and/or field experience repairing and maintaining building gas fired water heaters and electrical fresh air exhaust vents
  • Two years training and/or field experience in high pressure steam system piping and components of a close return system
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectable demeanor with staff and customers that fosters good relations
  • Ability to adapt, prioritize, and organize multiple tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
