Chilled Water Plant – University of Iowa, Utilities

Minimum Base Salary:  $49,924.08/year to commensurate with a complete benefits package.  

The University of Iowa Chilled Water facility provides support to a major Big 10 University and UI Hospitals and Clinics facilities.  The facilities have large turbine driven chillers, electric chillers, and absorption chillers with total capacity near 37,000 tons.

Under general supervision, the Utility E&I Technician III applies knowledge and skill to operate and maintain the chiller plant control systems and instrumentation.  The technician will troubleshoot and maintain low voltage (<480 V) equipment, distributed controls system (GE Cimplicity), programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), and instrumentation related to the chilled water industry.  The technician will be expected to track and document maintenance and troubleshooting status using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).  Changes to drawings or schematics will also be documented by the technician for controlled document updates.

Required qualifications include:  High school diploma or GED; Journey level electrician with six years of experience in utility systems, industrial plant, process plant or power plant OR An AAS or BS degree in electronics or instrumentation and control systems with four years experience in utility systems, industrial plant, process plant or power plant.  

Experience must include at least four years with electric motor controls, station power systems, and/or electrical, electronic and pneumatic control systems and at least two years of experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), water and gas analyzers, distributed control systems, CAD systems and the use of databases and management tools associated with databases.  Must have valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Driving Standards.  Criminal background check will also be required.

Work hours: MON-FRI 8:00 am – 4:30 pm with required rotating weekend on-call mandatory overtime.
