The Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing (CBB) at the University of Iowa is seeking to add an Associate Chemist to its dedicated professional staff. Reporting to the Director of Quality Assurance, the new hire will perform a variety of analytical tasks associated with the pilot scale manufacturing of proteins. The new hire is also expected to assume responsibilities for developing and executing new standard operating procedures (SOP’s) required for the operation and maintenance of analytical instruments and their measurements. The CBB is a contract and development manufacturing organization, as in the work is as ordered by our clients.

For more than twenty years, the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing (CBB) has been combining first-class scientific faculty with cutting-edge facilities to reshape and define new technologies for chemical, pharmaceutical, nutritional and agrochemical industries. In 1995, we opened our new laboratory at The University of Iowa Research Park (previously called Oakdale Research Park) North of the University of Iowa, where our multidisciplinary faculty has continued to dedicate themselves to education, research, and technology transfer related to biocatalysis and bioprocessing. We are proud that in the past two decades, our scientists have routinely made significant contributions to the advancement of science while working with industrial, governmental, and academic clients. We also have continued to work to bring life science-based companies to Iowa. Today, the CBB consists of a growing number of more than 50 faculty members and more than 300 researchers, including graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral scientists, technicians, and visiting faculty and industrial scientists. Our faculty members come from ten different departments and are home to more than 20 predoctoral fellows. Our principal areas of study include biocatalyst fundamental properties, bioremediation, bioprocessing, new biocatalyst discovery, novel biocatalyst applications, biosensing technology, and reactive agent development.

Qualifications: Education or Equivalency Required A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Required Qualifications

  • Typically at least 3 years of industry-related experience in analytical science as applied to manufacturing.
  • Proficient in designing quality assurance protocols.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and teams in a constructive and civil manner and utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals and needs.
  • Display a willingness to understand all downstream bioprocessing operations.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record-keeping.
  • Demonstrate success in the development and ability to document new analytical methods.
  • Experience in using analytical techniques to prepare solutions.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • More than three years of experience in industrial biotechnology manufacturing.
  • Experience in leadership roles, for example a) technical training of personnel, b) developing SOP's, and c) professional mentoring of junior staff.
  • Experience in validation of analytical instrumentation designed for process monitoring.
  • Experience with ISO14644-1, USP<643>, USP<645>

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge and experience with standard analytical instrumentation and methods.
  • Experience with high-performance liquid chromatography.
