Job Information:

The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP), College of Pharmacy, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate Chemist.

This position performs difficult qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses involving mainly Gas Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography instrumentation equipped with specialized detectors to conduct assays on stability and finished drug products.

Required Qualifications:

Experience (typically 2-4 years) performing laboratory testing in a regulated environment.

Demonstrates a working level of proficiency in the following competencies/qualifications:
  • Analytical chemistry (UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, pH, moisture determination, titrations, etc.)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) or Gas Chromatography (GC) with associated software packages used in pharmaceutical quality control or similar industry
  • Laboratory testing including the ability to independently troubleshoot analytical method issues
  • Documentation of analytical results in a regulated environment
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Universal Competencies (Collaboration and Embracing Diversity, Service Excellence/Customer Focus and Positive Impact/Achieving Results)
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel and Outlook)

Demonstrates an extensive level of proficiency in the following competencies/qualifications:
  • Laboratory equipment operation including the ability to independently troubleshoot laboratory equipment and technical systems problems

Ability to work independently with a high level of discretion
Physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Move up to and including 50 lbs 
  • Achieve passing criteria in visual testing (minimum of 20/20 visual acuity with or without corrected lenses)* 
  • Be able to wear a respirator**
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time

*Evaluation will be conducted by the University of Iowa Employee Health Clinic.  **Applicants may provide current respirator clearance certification dated within six months of the date of the offer, from a similar health clinic or health provider in lieu of the evaluation by UI Employee Health Clinic.

Baseline bloodwork will be required at time of hire and annually thereafter due to possible exposure to hazardous chemicals.
