Senior Research Scientist, Microbiology

Diamond V, who is recognized throughout the animal nutrition field as an innovative, scientifically motivated feed ingredient supplier, is seeking to hire a Senior Research Scientist, Microbiology located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Senior Research Scientist (Innovation Group) is part of a team responsible for new product development, current product research, and technical service at Diamond V’s Research and InnovationCenter (RIC) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

This position is responsible for ideating, driving scientific proof ofconcept studies and providing cross-departmental consultation both within a specific area of expertise(Microbiology) and at a broader project team level. Above average communication skills, technicalexpertise, and persistence are required to deliver innovative solutions within a continually changingenvironment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Including, but not limited to the following. Other
duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Manages current and new product (Stage 3) microbiology activities and deliverables.
  • Leads or advises on various scientific teams during method and prototype development with the goal of identifying key performance characteristics (i.e. health and efficiency) and developing/performing appropriate chemical or bio assays.
  • Develops, adapts and performs in vitro microbial digestive modeling, strain bank management, differential plating, antimicrobial resistance, fermentation optimization and other microbiological assays.
  • Develops and utilizes basic and advanced microbiology, chemistry, molecular and biological techniques and equipment to rank prototypes.
  • Works with various groups and individuals, both internal and external to identify strategic opportunities in alignment with Diamond V research strategy.
  • Leads cross-departmental project teams to move projects through Stage 3 (NPD) proof of concept or (current product) decisions, identifies the next step and maintains management deadlines.
  • Makes formal presentations of progress or final results to cross-departmental teams, business unit teams, peers at industry conferences and visiting Professors and customers.
  • Researches literature proposes and applies novel scientific techniques to succeed in priority projects. 
  • Maintains knowledge of current technologies and advancements in microbiology by attending training and collaborating with off-site scientists.
  • Prepares internal research reports, first drafts of marketing reports, conference posters and manuscripts as projects are completed. 
  • Collaborates with and supports Technical Service, Field Tech, Embria, Production and Regulatory on team initiatives.
  • Provides customers tours and slide presentations on a regular basis.
  • May serve as Co-Investigator or Monitor for in-house animal research trials.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • May be required to serve as departmental safety, GLP, HACCP, housekeeping or maintenance committee lead.
  • 80% of time spent in laboratory, 15% on literature review and reporting. Overnight travel is required up to 5% of the time for education or external trial support. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

  • Works closely with other scientists and team members across departments.
  • Routine contact with consultants, vendors, and customers.


Education, Experience and Skills:
  • Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field with 5+ years lab research experience or M.S. with 10+ years research experience.
  • Experienced in basic and advanced microbiological techniques including selective isolation, maintenance of culture collection, taxonomic classification, antimicrobial sensitivity, trait selective screening, fermentation optimization for bioactive metabolites, genome sequencing, mutagenesis, plasmid insertions, and genetic testing of various bacterial, fungal, mold, virus or algal populations from biological or environmental sources.
  • Experience modeling or studying pathogen or novel treatment effects, on the microbial community of a vertebrate host and environment.
  • Experience using stress models to research microbial impact on host immunology, virology and gene expression is a plus.
  • Experience fermenting target organisms to discover innovative approaches to new product development is a plus.
  • Experience as PI or Monitor of animal research is beneficial.
  • Experienced with word processing, graphical and statistical software (SASS/JMP), report generation, publication and delivery of presentations.
  • Possesses strong initiative, innovative, organizational, troubleshooting and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, to all levels of employees and external contacts.
  • Ability to analyze a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, propose reasonable
  • solutions, make logical decisions, carry out decisions, and conduct appropriate follow-up.
  • Meet deadlines and works effectively alone or as a team with flexibly under time constraints and with interruptions.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Requirements:
  • Considerable amount of physical activity including repetitive motion, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, gripping and twisting as well as extended periods of sedentary work is expected.
  • Requires working with and safety and effectively handling chemicals, biohazards and allergens, which if handled improperly may be a health hazard.
  • Requires lifting up to 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Good vision is required in order to take measurements accurately and read detailed printed materials.
  • Requires above average intellectual ability and good judgment to deal effectively with a wide range of problem solving and trouble shooting activities.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with manager, coworkers and vendors on a daily basis to maintain a safe and effective work environment.
