Music & Recreational Therapist, Hospice Community

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by increasing patients' quality of life through music. The Music Therapist is a part of the interdisciplinary team and will provide music therapy intervention to patients and consults with other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide a therapeutic treatment plan.
 
Job Duties
  • Provide music therapy in 1:1 or group setting follows the practices set forth by the American Music Therapy Association
  • Attend Care Conferences as needed
  • Assist with providing a Plan of Care for each resident
  • Conduct assessments and provide interventions that are individualized to each resident
  • Assist in getting residents to activities and assisting with activities as needed
  • Consult with interdisciplinary team members regarding resident referrals and to assess needs to provide assessments and provide/prioritize interventions
  • Promptly complete and maintain all required records and reports
  • Continually develop and evaluate music therapy program and services
  • Assist with bereavement services as requested
  • Consult with staff members on the use of music to meet individual resident needs
  • Foster the human dignity and personal worth of each resident

Department Specific Duties
  • Professionally and effectively provide appropriate music therapy services related to the terminal diagnoses of patients who are receiving hospice care, routine home care, respite care, or general in-patient level of care
  • Develop ethical and therapeutic relationships with patients and encourage and support patients and families
  • Generate accurate, concise, and timely documentation related to the music therapy sessions provided
  • Participate in patient care related collaboration with colleagues from hospice as well as nursing home staff and family members

  • Effective communication skills and understanding of and commitment to the interdisciplinary philosophy

  • Compassion for the patient and their family members
Professional Experience
  • Experience in Long Term Care or Hospice preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy is required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Board Certified as a Music Therapist by CBMT and continued compliance with continuing music therapy education required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
