Infection Control Specialist Position Description:

This individual is accountable for decreasing the incidence and transmission of infectious diseases between patients, staff, visitors and the community. Through strategic planning, leadership and consultation, they will lead implementation of infection prevention goals and objectives throughout the facility. 

  • Partners with the Infection Control Coordinator, Patient Safety Risk Manager and Infectious Disease Physician to develop, implement, and evaluate annual infection prevention goals and action plans.
  • Partners with facility leaders, physicians, local, state, and national agencies on activities related to infection prevention.
  • Effectively communicates with Human Resources and Occupational Health on Employee Health issues as required.
  • Accountable for surveillance of healthcare acquired and community acquired infections.
  • Assists goal setting process for system, unit and physician goals related to healthcare acquired infections and conditions. Assists industrial hygiene programs to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, migrate, and control workplace conditions.
  • Presents data in an effective manner, including creating graphs, charts, etc.
  • Participates in the national collaboratives and external reporting to CDC NHSN system, and other post acute-care specific quality organizations as required. Performs Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRAs) and implements action accordingly. 
  • Assists in responsibility for ensuring appropriate intervention and education occurs with staff, volunteers and medical staff when healthcare infection trends, outbreaks or non-compliance to infection control/OSHA are identified.
  • Ensures that education and counseling on infection prevention is available for staff, volunteers, medical staff, patients, and parents.
  • Supports and participates in interdisciplinary performance and quality improvement process.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and ensures that the facility leaders are informed of appropriate issues. Understands and complies with infection control, safety and OSHA procedures and regulations.
  • Knowledgeable in regulatory and accreditation requirements. Ensures compliance with standards and conditions of participation (COPs) for CMS.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program or degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field - Required
  • Bachelor of Science degree is required. 

Experience:

  • Medical/surgical nursing experience, or experience in epidemiology, public health, or related field - 3 years
  • Knowledgeable of nursing practice and able to demonstrate techniques and methods for preventing cross infection.
  • Knowledge of the principles of epidemiology, including the application of research/best practice and statistical concepts.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize. 

Certification: 

  • If Graduate of accredited nursing program must have current licensure as a registered nurse in Iowa or ability to obtain - Required
  • Completion of approved basic infection control training course - Preferred
