Care Initiatives is currently seeking a Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselor to join our team!

Our hospice Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselors are uniquely qualified to attend to the spiritual needs of patients in the final stages of life. We meet the patient and family members where they are, going to their home, a long-term care center, assisted living residence or hospital to administer compassionate hospice care.

Our approach addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those facing life-limiting illness for themselves and their families. We work closely with family members and caregivers to respect the wishes and needs of our patients and their loved ones with the utmost compassion, dignity, and respect for those in their final stages of life.

Purpose of the position:

The Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselor supports the spiritual needs of patients/families/caregivers in a manner consistent with their beliefs and desires.

The primary responsibilities of a Spiritual Care & Bereavement Counselor are to provide comprehensive assessment of the patient, family, and caregiver’s spiritual needs; assesses the bereavement risk of the patient/family/caregiver; and provide comprehensive bereavement services for the family/caregiver.

Participates as member of interdisciplinary team (IDT) in development of patient care plan. Provides services to patient/family/caregiver in accordance with care plan.


  • Master of Divinity Degree from an accredited seminary;
religious group has the practice of ordination. If the religion does not practice ordination, but practices licensure, then licensure in lieu of ordination is acceptable; and endorsed and in good standing from the ecclesiastical governing body;


  • Baccalaureate degree in psychology, sociology, counseling or other field related to pastoral care, grief services or counseling.
  • Current Iowa driver’s license and automobile liability insurance
