Care Initiatives is currently hiring a Full-time Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselor to serve both Cedar Rapids and Waterloo regions!

Our hospice Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselors are uniquely qualified to attend to the spiritual needs of patients in the final stages of life. We meet the patient and family members where they are, going to their home, a long-term care center, assisted living residence, or hospital to administer compassionate hospice care.

Our approach addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those facing life-limiting illness for themselves and their families. We work closely with family members and caregivers to respect the wishes and needs of our patients and their loved ones with the utmost compassion, dignity, and respect for those in their final stages of life.

Purpose of the position:

The Spiritual Care and Bereavement Counselor arranges for counseling or provides counseling to meet the spiritual needs of patients/families/caregivers in a manner consistent with their beliefs and desires. Provides for the bereavement needs of the families/caregivers by providing counseling and bereavement services to those survivors. Ensure the services that are provided are in accordance with the patient’s acceptance of these services and the patient’s care plan.

The primary responsibilities of a Spiritual Care & Bereavement Counselor are to provide comprehensive assessment of the patient, family, and caregiver’s spiritual needs; bereavement risk assessment of the patient/family/caregiver; comprehensive bereavement assessment of the family/caregiver. From the assessment, identifies family/caregiver bereavement needs. Based on patient/family/caregiver needs, identifies appropriate spiritual and bereavement interventions and goals for patient care plan.

Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team (IDT) in the development of patient care plan. Provides services to patient/family/caregiver in accordance with the care plan.


Qualifications:

  • Master of Divinity Degree from an accredited seminary; and ordination, if the particular religious the group has the practice of ordination. If the religion does not practice ordination, but practices licensure, then licensure in lieu of ordination is acceptable and endorsed, and in good standing from the ecclesiastical governing body.
     OR
  • Baccalaureate degree in social work from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and is supervised by an MSW; or
  • Baccalaureate degree in psychology, sociology, counseling, or other field related to pastoral care, grief services or counseling.
  • Current Iowa driver’s license and automobile liability insurance
