The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Pathology is seeking a Staff Nurse to provide specialized care to patients in a highly regulated environment. Perform work that involves numerous steps and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. Operate cell separators and other equipment while caring for patients undergoing apheresis procedures. Provide care to patients with varying levels of acuity and age, ranging from outpatients to highly acute inpatients. Supervise designated laboratory staff as directed. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified individual seeking to work in a fast-paced learning environment within our DeGowin Blood Center.


Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Primarily Monday – Friday, primarily between 0700 and 1700

Rotations: Rotating on-call responsibilities (evenings, weekends, and holidays)

Education Required

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Master of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.

Experience Requirements

  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Iowa.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills are required.
  • Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

Desirable Qualifications

  • 1-3 years acute care nursing experience.
  • Previous experience using electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in a blood donor or apheresis center.
  • Experience using highly specialized medical equipment.
