The City of Cedar Rapids is adding a highly motivated Plans Examiner to keep up with strong growth and development in our community.  The Plans Examiner will review commercial building plans, guide our customers on building code requirements, and facilitate successful outcomes for building and occupancy permits. About the position:

The Plans Examiner will join Cedar Rapids Development Services team of engineers, planners, building inspectors and Fire Marshals. This position will review plans for compliance with building codes, report findings and plan revisions, and confer with design professionals, contractors, and developers for building permit submittals.  This individual will advise and assist applicants to minimize plan review time and foster positive relationships with Cedar Rapids’ construction and development community.

The Plans Examiner position reviews architectural, life-safety, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fuel gas and site plans to verify compliance with federal, state and local codes and ordinances to ensure structures are safe and meet minimum design standards. 

Position Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm
Salary: $62,233.60 annually to commensurate with experience

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Reviews, processes and approves structural and nonstructural building.
  • Researches zoning codes and building plans for compliance,
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, building plan status, files, and reports.
  • Communicates with personnel, local code enforcement organizations, and construction industry on measurable outputs and comparatives, code changes, interpretive rulings, regulations and procedures to ensure all applicable standards have been met.
  • Works collaboratively with building officials, inspection staff, architects, engineers, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office to interpret requirements and restrictions, advises on new building methods and materials to establish good building practices.
  •  Takes an active role on the appeals boards.
  • Coordinates work activities of customer service representatives and assists permit technicians with technical items, permit scoping for design build, and phased projects; 
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction/Business Management, Architecture, Engineering, Business Administration and
  • Three or more years of experience in commercial building inspection, plan reviews and/or commercial construction experiences or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population

Desired Qualifications

  • International Code Council (ICC) certification
