About the position: 

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer position supports core functionality of city-wide server, storage, and management systems. The opportunity includes responsibilities for the architecture, design, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, optimization, documentation of all systems server, storage, virtualization, and orchestration related hardware and software solutions. Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and within a team setting, communicate to audiences with varying levels of technical abilities, prioritize multiple work items while making best use of time, and embrace the City’s core values.

Position Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm
Salary: $81,577.60 annually to commensurate with experience

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Develops and coordinates the maintenance of the city's network and server systems.
  • Leads configuration and installs of all network hardware, server hardware, storage and software systems.
  • Leads monitoring-system performance, bandwidth, throughput and storage capacity and restores data following system failures.
  • Leads, test, and run data backups and disaster recovery operations to confirm validity and restorability.
  • Leads research and implementation of network and server systems.
  • Leads tests and evaluates hardware and software with existing systems to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility before making recommendations to the Information Technology Infrastructure Manager. 
  • Leads and develops the establishment of goals and objectives for the network and server systems and monitors projects to ensure they conform to specifications; 
  • Keeps up-to-date on industry trends and technology innovations to streamline processes, demonstrate cost effective product solutions, and comply with standards, system specifications, meet architectural and customer requirements; works with presales vendors and/or design consultants on design of the solution.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and
  • Five to seven years of experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, Enterprise Backup Systems, Enterprise Security Systems, Enterprise Storage, Enterprise Servers, Firewalls, Networking, Scripting,  or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Required to obtain Iowa NCIC certification within six months of appointment

Desired Qualifications

  • Server-related certification
  • Network-related certification
