Parks Seasonal Laborer I / II [MUST BE 16+]

Provides labor and maintenance services for designated Parks, Recreation, Aquatic, Greenhouse and Sports Complex facilities including grounds keeping, light construction and building maintenance repair. Under general supervision; works independently and part of a work group.
Position Schedule: Employees needed throughout the course of the Parks season of March through November. Work days and hours will vary, may include nights and weekends (Part-time and Full-time positions available).
Areas of work within Parks Seasonal position:Greenhouse – Assists with planting and maintaining flowers within the greenhouse and throughout the city’s park system. (NE Quadrant)
Trail Maintenance – Assists with mowing, trimming, and maintaining the city’s trail system.
Park Attendant – Provides customer service by prepping pavilions, restrooms, and parks for pavilion rentals. Ensures parks are trash free and presentable for users.
Tuma Complex – Assists with field prep for soccer and other events, mowing, trimming, and general maintenance.
Ball Diamonds – Assists with ball diamond prep as well as mowing and field maintenance. (Ellis/Tait)
General Park Maintenance – Assists with mowing, trimming, general maintenance and projects.
Recreations Maintenance/Aquatic Support – Assists with playground and aquatic support, including mowing.
ReLeaf Assistance – Assists with planting, watering, and care for newly planted trees as part of the ReLeaf Cedar Rapids initiative.
Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.
- Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Laborer I:
- Removes trash and cleans maintenance areas, rest rooms, pavilions and splash pads; paints as needed;
- Maintains parks, recreation, and aquatic grounds using push or riding mowers, string trimmers and other ground maintenance tools; and reports as to the general condition of the assigned park areas;
- Edges, rototills, rakes, plants, waters, mulches and weeds ornamental beds;
- Assists Certified Pool Operators in maintaining swimming pools;
- Prepares ballfields to include mowing, smoothing surface, paint and chalk lines and clean facilities;
- Operate various mowing equipment (push, v-ride, 6’,11’, 16’ turf mowers), tractors with various attachments, etc. to maintain parks and surrounding grounds;
- Cleans, greases, and maintains equipment on a regular basis;
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;
- Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;
- Performs related work as required.
Laborer II:
- Includes all duties listed above in addition to:
- Operate garbage truck compactor and/ or assist in parks’ garbage removal activities.
- Operate and transport with truck and trailer various mowing equipment (push, stand-on, large area ride-on turf mowers), tractors with various attachments, etc. to maintain parks and surrounding grounds;
- Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Laborer I:
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred.
Laborer II:
- Experience in general labor, grounds maintenance, operation of tractors, mowers and related power tools.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred.
