Lifeguard (MUST BE 15 YEARS OR OLDER)

Ensures the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies and performs related work as required.

Supervises patrons, applying and enforcing established facility policies, rules and regulations as each situation warrants.
 

Position Schedule: Pool season runs Mid-May through Labor Day. Hours available vary Monday-Sunday, including day, night, and weekend shifts; Part-time and full-time positions available.


Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies;
  • Adheres to and enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations and educates patrons about them;
  • Administers first aid and CPR; including using an AED;
  • Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors;
  • Promotes good relations with patrons and staff;
  • Completes records and reports as required;
  • Participates in staff in-service training sessions and meetings;
  • Exercises regularly to maintain fitness level in terms of strength and endurance;
  • Performs light maintenance to assure safe and healthy facilities;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
  • Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;
  • Supports City's continuous process improvement initiatives;
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • Previous work experience preferred.  Experience working with children and youth preferred.
Required Special Qualifications:
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training.
