About the position: 

In this role, you will be a part of the Water Distribution team in the Utilities Department. You will get to play with heavy machinery all day while making a lasting impact for your community!  You will help install, maintain and repair valves, hydrants, water mains, and service lines and service valves as well as street and yard restoration. Position Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Repairs damage caused by construction and maintenance activities;

  • Operates light and heavy equipment in the installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, hydrants, water mains, service lines and related structures;

  • Operates light and heavy equipment to build roads, dikes, and to grade and level ground;

  • Services and maintains light and heavy equipment;

  • Performs competent person duties in trenching and excavation activities;

  • Drives and unloads trucks;

  • Performs emergency and routine work as necessary during time periods outside normal working hours;

  • Follows sound safety practices;

  • Wears and properly uses all safety equipment including personal protective;

  • Unloads pipe and fittings;

  • Provides labor and uses hand tools as required;

  • Uses specialized equipment to locate leaks, pipelines, and other components in the distribution system;

  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;

  • Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;

  • Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;

  • Performs related work as required.

 

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • One year experience in operating heavy equipment and maintenance or operation of a water distribution system; or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications:
  • Valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (Class A) within one year of hire.  

  • Possession of a State of Iowa Grade I Water Distribution Operators License within one year of appointment;

  • Certificate as a “trained competent person” (as applied to trenching/shoring OSHA standards) within one year of appointment
