UHR Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist will assist with the communication functions for University Human Resources (UHR), which manages benefits, compensation, professional development, and health and wellness programming for University of Iowa employees. The person in this role will work closely with the senior director of strategic communication, who leads internal and external communication, branding, marketing, and media relations for UHR in partnership with the Office of Strategic Communication (OSC).

Specifically, a person in this position will perform responsibilities in the following primary areas: content creation, communication management and coordination, executing UHR social media strategy, and developing and maintaining relationships with key partners and audiences.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Write and edit news releases, talking points, feature stories, op-eds, video scripts, etc. for a range of platforms
  • Proofread, restructure, and edit current web content as needed
  • Design and update webpages with new content, including graphic elements and text
  • Collaborate with other UHR team members to update existing and create new website content
  • Serve as liaison to news media interested in covering people or programs within UHR. This may include suggesting experts, promptly responding to requests from journalists, arranging interviews, and writing talking points.
  • Assist the senior director of strategic communication in anticipating and communicating about sensitive subjects
  • Assist with writing and editing communications for UHR leadership
  • Prepare regular analytics reports on internal communication efforts
  • Monitor news coverage, alerting UHR and OSC leadership about threats or opportunities regarding the university’s reputation or operation
  • Working with the senior director, identify, develop, write, edit, and disseminate communications and supporting materials (internally and externally) related to UHR, its people, programs, and initiatives. This may include but is not limited to creating communication and marketing plans and timelines, news stories, email communications, website content, talking points, internal reports, and social media posts. Repurpose content for different internal audiences and channels
  • Manage and execute communication and marketing projects and annual communication calendar
  • Assists in project plans that may include costs, scheduling, and resource requirements

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communication, marketing, journalism, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience (typically 1-3 years) in the following areas:
    • Public relations or marketing experience
    • Producing content in a variety of formats including print, video, social media, or advertising.
    • Develop and maintain content for the website
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to write effectively under deadline for a variety of purposes, audiences, and media.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tools and techniques for developing web-based dissemination of information, including website design, graphic elements, layout, user experience requirements, or accessibility.
  • Attention to detail.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated organizational and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and plan across channels and develop effective communication strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality infographics and/or other media to represent data, knowledge, or information.
