The Office of Governmental Relations is seeking a Constituent Communication Coordinator to develop, implement, and assess communication and outreach efforts for the Office of Governmental Relations. This includes using diverse materials and channels, including print and digital, to create targeted messaging to build support with Iowa elected officials to strengthen the understanding and build support for the University of Iowa’s people and programs. 

Key Areas of Responsibility 

  • Works closely with advocacy director in developing innovative communications and projects to strengthen University’s advocacy storytelling efforts. 
  • Identifies and develops content for weekly emails to legislators, and Hawkeye Caucus supporters which advocates to advance and support the University’s advocacy goals.
  • Assist in the creation and production of reports, handouts, and other materials to strengthen the University’s advocacy goals.
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with various constituencies and exhibit sound judgement as it relates to all forms of communication and messaging.
  • Plan and support the administration of advocacy trainings for students, faculty, and staff, both online and in-person as needed. 
  • Assist in planning and executing events, including Hawkeye Caucus Day, the University of Iowa’s annual advocacy day at the Iowa State Capitol.
  • Assist in the hosting, planning, execution, and support of legislative and congressional campus visits.
  • Provides other support, as needed, for the Office of Strategic Communication.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, public affairs, communications or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to write effectively under deadline for a variety of purposes, goals, audiences, and media.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships coalitions with various constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines, ability to multi-task and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of the state and federal legislative processes with a demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to developing and carrying out coherent communication strategies.
  • At least one-year related professional experience working in a political campaign, elected office, city government, nonprofit advocacy organization, or corporate government affairs office or similar. 
  • Provide one writing sample highlighting the audience and goal of the piece.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working in constituent relations or campaign communications.
  • Experience editing website content.
  • Experience gathering and interpreting data.
  • Experience with InDesign, advanced Excel or similar.
