The classification title for this role is Interactive News Developer & Data Researcher. The interactive news developer and researcher creates engaging news applications and experiences on digital and mobile platforms to grow audience engagement and improve storytelling. 

This developer works with reporters, editors and other team members to design and build interactive graphics, provide support in research and analysis for reporting, and buildsdata visualizations and news applications which support journalism ventures.
This developer thrives working on audience-focused projects and is able to work on projects of varying lengths, including some on deadline.

  • Maintains strong programming skills and utilizes JavaScript, CSS and HTML and other modern Web technologies.
  • Uses analytics tools to help identify and prioritize opportunities and measure audience engagement and understanding.
  • Maintains a strong knowledge regarding trends in technology, data news and engagement, user interfaces and information structures.
  • Understands responsive Web design and how to implement it in news applications.
  • Builds reuseable code to get projects done faster and more efficiently, with an eye towards templates that can be more pervasively used throughout the staff.
  • Works collaboratively as a team including developers and non-technical staff.
  • Strong ability to put complex topics into context while emphasizing outstanding user experiences.
  • Understanding of developer APIs such as Google maps, Twitter and Facebook
  • Assist in designing and developing the look and feel of news products, including user experience of both online and mobile products.
  • Is adept in researching and analyzing data sets. Can be a liason between data and reporter to help inform reporting, and lead to more comprehensive storytelling.
  • Is excited by the daily news cycle, pivoting quickly to aid in breaking news research, and digital environments that engage readers around high-traffic content.
  • Adheres to all professional and company policies, coverage philosophies and ethical standards.
Job skills & attributes:
Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, creative go-getter and problem solver who works well on a newsroom team with varying skill sets. Candidate must display technical aptitude and have interest in enhancing news products. Must be able to distill complex subjects into understandable and accessible elements. Candidate should have desire to learn new skills and should have a passion for helping inform the community.

Strong skills in HTML and CSS. Ability to craft front-end experiences using Javascript. Comfortable working with XML and JSON APIs. Familiarity with PHP, Ruby on Rails or Django is helpful.
Demonstrates a background in data research and analysis that leads to the front-end visualizations. Is comfortable combing government data repositories, and digging for the answers among cumbersome data sets.

Minimum Requirements:
Undergraduate degree in journalism, computer science, informatics, or related field of study is required. Candidate must demonstrate ability to work accurately, meet deadlines and be able to present news in an ever-changing media landscape. Must be able to work with non-technical staff and translate ideas into functioning interactive tools. Approximately 2-5 years of experience in a multimedia newsroom or related industry space is required.
