Community Engagement Manager

Position Summary:
Orchestra Iowa invites applicants for the newly created position of Community Engagement Manager, charged with strengthening Orchestra Iowa’s community-focused programs and assisting with the implementation of overall communications strategy. The successful candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial individual who can design, implement, and evaluate the Orchestra’s education and community partnership programs.

The Manager works alongside the Marketing Director to promote various performance and community-centered activities through public communication outlets, including setting and activating the organization’s social media strategy. S/he partners with the Orchestra’s CEO, Music Director, Chief Operating Officer, Marketing Director, and School Manager and will interact frequently with musicians, teachers, community leaders, media personnel, and volunteer groups.

Educational Programming (25%)
  • Develop curriculum for Orchestra Iowa ensembles for varied outreach services, including Music in the Schools, Pied Piper concerts, and residencies; explore growth opportunities for each
  • Collaborate with school districts to develop educational service contracts and fulfill all expectations
  • In partnership with Music Director, create and implement engaging programs for Orchestra Iowa Youth Concert
  • Establish and build relationships with school districts (including music faculty), universities, community music schools, and other parties with shared interests
  • Develop and manage all guest artist master classes and residency programs
  • Oversee Fifth Grade Fiddles curriculum and logistics

Community Relations (25%)
  • Identify, design, and implement new opportunities for Orchestra Iowa programs to be represented in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and surrounding areas
  • Seek out and organize participation in events that expand the profile of Orchestra Iowa and Orchestra Iowa School programs, such as community fairs, conventions, and festivals
  • Create and expand musical programming at non-traditional venues, such as restaurants, grocery stores, etc.
  • Identify and recruit groups, organizations, and partners to present pre-concert activities and performers for all Orchestra Iowa masterworks and pops concerts

Orchestra Iowa School (15%)
  • Collaborate with School Manager to develop and implement a strategy to grow Orchestra Iowa School programs
  • Examine and recommend opportunities for program expansion or new program development
  • Grow tuition-based program participation by developing and supporting extensive recruitment efforts

Communications (25%)
  •  In collaboration with Marketing Director, develop and implement media strategies that promote a positive brand identity throughout the Eastern Iowa Corridor
  • Develop and implement Orchestra’s overall social media strategies, including creating and disseminating content
  • Assist with creation and distribution of news releases, media promotion scripts, and announcements
  • Work with community businesses and organizations to develop grassroots promotional opportunities

Administrative (10%)
  • Develop and monitor program standards, outcomes, and evaluation metrics for all Orchestra Iowa programs and projects. Report on community impact, and identify and interview individuals to collect personal testimonials
  • Identify opportunity for increasing funding available to Orchestra Iowa community engagement programs. Collaborate with development staff to submit grants, proposals, and solicitations to identified prospects
  • Write articles for Overture magazine, as needed
  • Participate in rotation of concert duties for Orchestra Iowa performances
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Passion for the performing arts a must
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, arts administration, music education, or related field required
  • Minimum of one year relevant experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms required
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Must possess outstanding attention to detail and be well-organized and able to manage competing projects simultaneously
  • Must be responsible, reliable, able to work weekends and evenings
  • Must be extremely courteous and a team player

Salary is $30-32k, commensurate with experience. Orchestra Iowa provides excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, long-term disability insurance, downtown parking and many others.

Founded in 1921, Orchestra Iowa is widely recognized as the state’s premier symphony orchestra. Its 68 professional musicians present more than 180 classical, ballet, popular, chamber and educational performances each season, many of which are heard on Iowa Public Radio and seen on Iowa Public Television. Orchestra Iowa currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million, operates under a collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians and is a member of the League of American Orchestras and the Regional Orchestra Players Association (ROPA).
