The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking a general assignment features reporter focused on daily and enterprise coverage on themes related to lifestyles. This position, based in Cedar Rapids, is focused on finding story ideas where no one else might and is able to report on trends, personalities and events in a fresh way that puts the audience first. This beat covers a lot of territory – including but not limited to food, outdoors, entertainment, arts and life in Eastern Iowa.


Our ideal candidate knows how to mix daily beat reporting with in-depth profiles. You think about the limitless ways the story can be told online. You’re also interested in creative approaches to reporting and storytelling. You also must be able to handle multiple stories simultaneously. Our ideal candidate should have some previous experience and should be comfortable in an environment where they can grow, but you’ll be expected to help others grow, too.

Our organization:

Our news operation is converged and is a quality-driven newsroom that combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette and as well as several niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is ESOP-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news agencies. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City, which is home to the University of Iowa. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.

Qualifications & requirements:

Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, inquisitive, creative go-getter and problem-solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication and team-building skills. Candidate must be highly organized, a confident decision-maker and committed to ongoing improvement and coaching. Juggling multiple deadlines simultaneously should be expected, and you should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. An undergraduate degree in journalism, communications or a related course of study is required, and ideal candidate will have two to five years’ experience in reporting, with a focus on enterprise work. Understanding of journalism ethics and communication law is required.
