BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide functional supervision of train crews, train movements and coordinates the on-time operation, as well as the safe and efficient movement of trains and Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment on the railroad.  Assignments are performed according to established policies and procedures required by the railroad and federal government. Must work in the dispatcher office for the duration of the shift.

Reports to:  Director – Customer Services
                      Iowa/Illinois Superintendents of Train Operations
                      Chief Transportation Officer

Supervises: No direct reports

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Issues necessary Track Warrants and Track Bulletins to move trains across the railroad and recording all information as required by the Railroad and federal government.
  2. Provide functional supervision of train crews and coordinates the on-time operation, as well as the safe and efficient movement of trains and Maintenance of Way equipment on the railroad.
  3. Performs assignments according to established policies and procedures required by the railroad and federal government.
  4. Issues necessary Track Warrants and Track Bulletins for the protection of Maintenance of Way work crews.
  5. Ensures train crews are contacted in an efficient manner and manpower requirements are being met to staff trains.
  6. Keeps posted on weather conditions over the Railroad and acts when pending adverse conditions exist to insure safe train operation.
  7. Informs supervisors of accidents, incidents, emergency situations, overall operations and any delays.
  8. Records information and generate reports as required by the Railroad.
  9. Allocating locomotives for trains, insuring the proper horsepower/tonnage ratings are maintained.
  10. Responsible for performing duties and working hours as scheduled, including overtime, holidays, nights and weekends.
  11. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Licenses/Certifications and Work Experience: High School Graduate or equivalent required. Prior experience and knowledge of transportation/train operations and rules preferred. Computer experience required.

  • Ability to operate a sending-receiving radio console, computer, faxes and other general office equipment.
  • Must be proficient at keyboarding, use of MS Office products and other software that is utilized for the safe operations of the railroad.
  • Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures and regulations required by the Railroad and federal government.   
  • Familiar with track and must know physical characteristics of railroad.
  • Ability to maintain the on-time operation of the trains.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, management, and customers (internal and external).
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time with a positive outcome.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Constant (67-100%) sitting, particularly for sustained periods of time, and doing a variety of work manually or on computer, talking and hearing either on the telephone, radio or in person; repetitive motion; grasping; and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Frequent reaching (34-66%).  Occasional (10-33%) standing, walking, kneeling, and crouching.Position may be stressful at times due to interruptions and multiple tasks to be completed, while insuring safety and efficient movement of train.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position involves working in an office setting and may be subject to noise, (causes worker to shout to be heard) dust and diesel fumes.  The job incumbent will be required to occasionally (10-33%) travel to train yards and ride trains.
