Director, Environmental & Linen Services

Job Information:

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by directing all activities within the Environmental Services and Linen Services Department. This is accomplished by managing departmental functions such as operating budget, safety, infection control/cleanliness, environment of care, staffing, supervision and discipline.
  • Oversees the fiscal performance of the departments to comply with monthly budget statements and productivity goals.
  • Works with the Department’s Safety Coordinators as needed to ensure compliance.
  • Assists Infection Control/Prevention to make sure cleaning standards are met and the cleanliness of the hospital is maintained.
  • Assures the standardization of cleaning chemicals and processes across the Mercy organization.
  • Works with outside cleaning agencies to assure staff competencies, appropriate access, and contracts and compliance.
  • Manages Waste contracts including regulated/non-regulated, sharps removal, chemical and organic waste, confidential shredding and recycling.
  • Prepares and provides input for capital purchases, FTE’s, and operating budgets and keeps within the specified deadline.
  • Follows group purchasing expectations of compliance with contractual agreements.
  • Effectively manages staff hours including overtime, training and regular hours.
  • Works with department leaders to monitor department activities and to create improvement opportunities.
  • Leads or participates in organizational-wide committees as requested including Emergency Management and Environment of Care.
  • Actively manages the Hazardous Chemical section of the Environment of Care chapter for TJC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic math skills as well as the ability to communicate and interact effectively with all staff and visits is required.
  • Computer literacy includes proficiency in Microsoft products, including Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Other hospital supplied software including payroll and patient discharges will be required.
  • Must maintain neat appearance and professional image and demonstrate appropriate guest relation skills.

Professional Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the Environmental field and minimum of 3 years as manager/director/supervisor.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent experience in lieu of degree required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:
  • Must have Valid Driver’s License
  • Must provide and maintain a good driving record, documented at hire by a copy of official driving record from the Iowa DOT. 
  • Must have or become certified for (NIMS) National Incident Management System as part of the Incident Command Structure.
