Associate Counsel

University of Northern Iowa

Impact & Responsibilities:

  • Manages legal issues for the University related to labor and employment law, export controls, and immigration.
  • Provides counsel to the Provost Office on faculty grievances and employee contract issues.
  • Provides training for University employees.
  • Represents the University on the collective bargaining team with the United Faculty contract.
  • Manages legal cases and issues as assigned by University Counsel.
  • Provides prompt, accurate, and ongoing legal advice on a broad range of labor and employment matters
  • Participates in University committees and meetings as requested.
  • Completes all other duties assigned.



  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited school of law.
  • Admission or eligibility for admission within one year of employment to the Iowa Bar plus at least three years of experience in labor law or employment law.
  • Strong critical writing, analysis, and interpersonal communication skills.



  • Experience serving as an attorney within or supporting an institution of higher education.
  • Experience working on labor law issues.
  • Strong computer skills to complete research.
  • Experience with contracts.
  • Experience working with bargaining units, including collective bargaining; experience providing training to employees.
  • Experience working with immigration law issues.
  • Experience working with trademark issues.
  • Experience with export control issues preferred.
