Department Summary:
The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center is an interdisciplinary collaboration that resides in the College of Law at the University of Iowa. The Center’s mission is to strengthen nonprofit organizations and serve Iowa’s nonprofit sector through education, research, and engagement. The Center works collaboratively with local and state government agencies, public charities, private foundations, educational institutions, and beyond to deliver programs and services across the state. The Center also works to provide students at the University of Iowa the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive as future leaders of organizations that help make our communities healthier, smarter, cleaner, livelier, faith-filled, and prosperous.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a new assistant director. The individual hired to fill this position will carry out the Center’s work by providing professional assistance to Iowa’s nonprofit community through one-on-one advising; group training sessions; researching and writing content for the Center’s printed and online platforms; planning conferences; engaging in fundraising efforts; supporting the Center’s teaching mission; and bearing responsibility for some of the Center’s day-to-day operations. The position will require work both on and off the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
Communication and Outreach:
  • Promote the Center by helping to develop and carry out its communication strategy through the publication of the Center’s website, newsletter and publications, and other means.
  • Develop and present educational and training sessions for the leadership of Iowa nonprofit organizations and other professional groups. Help develop opportunities for such sessions through networking and by becoming educated about the demand for them.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group consulting to Iowa non-profit organization leaders, assisting them with administrative, organizational and compliance issues.
Strategic Planning:
  • Make recommendations and help develop a strategic plan for the Center.
  • Implement the strategic plan under guidance of the Director.
  • Help develop and execute fundraising strategies and campaigns.
Operational and Financial Management:
  • Develop and manage the Center’s existing programs and services.
  • Plan and implement new programs and services.
  • Evaluate the achievement of the Center’s objectives.
  • Direct budget development, oversee budget operations, and assure issues are resolved. 
  • Assure compliance with applicable legal and policy standards.
  • Recommend changes in policies and procedures as needed to satisfy those standards.
Quality Improvement:
  • Implement initiatives to improve organizational efficiency.
  • Facilitate and evaluate improvement the Center’s services and programs, encouraging community participation in and support of the Center.
  • Develop and implement policies and practices that promote a culture that supports of staff engagement in the workplace.
  • Provide effective leadership for staff and volunteers associated with the Center.

Position Qualifications:
Education/licensure requirements:
  • JD Degree with a license to practice law in Iowa (If no license to practice, candidate must commit to becoming licensed in Iowa within one year).
Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years’ experience working with the nonprofit sector in Iowa, or the functional equivalent of such experience.
  • 2-3 years’ experience developing and delivering formal/informal presentations to a variety of audiences, with and without multi-media tools. 
  • One or more years’ experience in a position of program management, decision-making and developing processes to meet strategic goals.
  • One or more years’ experience successfully developing collaborative relationships with diverse groups of people within or external to an organization.
  • A working knowledge and proficiency with one or more of the following: Microsoft Office Suite (or Word and Excel), web management software; and/or demonstrated ability to learn emerging technology.
  • A valid driver’s license, plus the ability to meet and maintain compliance with the University Driving Policy.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Creating online content, including tutorials.
  • One or more years working with promotional campaigns to attain program objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute fundraising strategies.
  • A record demonstrating a strong client service orientation. 
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
