Job Information:

The University of Iowa, Division of Sponsored Programs (DSP) seeks highly motivated, organized and service-oriented professionals to assume a key contract negotiator/administrator role. Responsibilities include reviewing, drafting, negotiating and administering research related agreements. The successful candidate will use independent judgment to determine and negotiate acceptable terms for a variety of contracts including funding agreements, data use agreements, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, and outgoing sub-awards. The position will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and University policies and procedures. Must demonstrate effective communication skills and develop good working relationships with external sponsors, principal investigators and other University departments. Candidates should have prior experience in contract negotiation and administration or a related field. Experience in a research environment or an advanced degree, including a JD or MBA, will be useful. The ideal candidate will exert independent judgment in decision-making and be accustomed to applying critical thinking skills.

Required qualifications include:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable (3-5 years) related experience including 1-3 years of research administration or contract administration experience, focusing on reviewing, drafting and negotiation. A Juris Doctorate may substitute for 1-3 years of the experience requirements.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of current local, state and federal regulations
  • Ability to problem solve and work under pressure in a high-volume deadline driven environment
  • Demonstrates independent judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work within a team and alone or with limited guidance, as appropriate
Desirable qualifications include:
  • Knowledge of current state and federal regulations as they relate to sponsored research administration and universities
  • Demonstrated ability to assess implications and obtain favorable terms in agreements
  • Advanced Degree in a related discipline - JD or MBA strongly preferred

Salary starts at $52,027 to commensurate based on experience and education. UI also offers an excellent benefits package.
