Corrections Social Worker
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking a Corrections Social Worker to provide behavioral skill development and/or crisis intervention to individuals incarcerated at the Johnson County Jail. This position will collaborate and function as a team member with multi-disciplinary colleagues including jail staff, courts, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and others to coordinate services for inmates with mental illness, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

  • Handle moderate to high levels of stress, meet established deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position
  • Type accurately and use a computer for the purposes of data entry, spreadsheets, wordprocessing, email and thei nternet
  • Operate common office equipment such as typewriters, calculators, fax and postage machines, transcription equipment, photocopiers,scanners and multi-line telephones
  • Have clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication
  • Have sufficien tmanual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboardand mouse
  • Have sufficient vision which permits moderate production and review of a wide variety of materials both in electronic and hardcopy forms
  • Lift, move, push and pull up to 15 pounds
  • Sit for extended time periods ,stand, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, twist and reach
  • Have sufficient personal mobility to complete field work at various facilities
  • Work flexible schedule and overtime as needed

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Attend initial court appearances and assess mental health and substance abuse needs of individuals that remain in custody.
  • Serve as a mental health consultant for the Johnson County Jail including providing support counseling, risk assessment ,and crisis intervention as needed for individuals in custody.
  • Provide resources and referrals that can help inmates make constructive use of their time while incarcerated at the Johnson County Jail.
  • Help inmates acclimate, cope with their surroundings and overcome barriers that threaten to undermine successful reintegration into the community.
  • Respond with patrol deputies to provide on-site crisis intervention services (intervention, referral, follow-up) to individuals in a mental health or behavioral health crisis as needed. Collect statistical data to measure outcomes and evaluate services.
  • Collaborate with community-based mental health and substance abuse providers to implement community treatment and individualized service plans.
  • Assist individuals with scheduling appointments and/or assessments or re-connecting with prior service providers. Provide follow-up services after the initial contact to ensure effective coordination of care.
  • Complete required paperwork, document services in a timely manner and maintain client files in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Remain in contact with the individual ,their family and the treatment providers by phone, electronically and/or in person to monitor participation in recommended services post incarceration.
  • Monitor compliance with court ordered treatment.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in social work, attend work-related meetings, conferences and seminars. Support the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program as needed.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Provide limited back-up for Corrections Healthcare Supervisor.
  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work or human services AND one (1) year of related experience; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Substance abuse and mental health background training is preferred.
Special requirements: Must pass background investigation. Valid driver's license and insurable under county liability coverage. May require use of personal vehicle or equivalent transportation for county business.
