The City of Pleasant Hill, Iowa is accepting applications for the position of Police Sergeant. Pleasant Hill is a progressive and growing community located in the Des Moines Metropolitan area.  One of the city’s priorities is our community’s quality of life and public safety.  Our department uses a community based policing model through community partnerships to achieve this goal.   The City of Pleasant Hill continues to invest in its Police Department by providing a new police station that will open in January 2021, training to aid staff members with their career goals, and working relationships with our federal and state partners. 

 

Applicants must have excellent leadership and communication skills that motivate staff members and the community.  Leadership includes knowledge of both state law and city ordinances to ensure the highest standards for our residents.  All members of our department live our motto of “Honor, Integrity, and Service”.

 

Applicants for the Police Sergeant position should have a minimum of (5) years of law enforcement experience, Associate Degree from an accredited college (Bachelor Degree Preferred), interpersonal skills, integrity, a clean driving record and be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

 

Applicants must be Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified. All applicants must complete and pass a background check, a medical exam and the MMPI. Certified applicants from out of State are required to successfully receive their ILEA certification within (6) months of hire.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications prior to being interviewed for the position:

  • (5) Years of Law Enforcement Experience
  • Associate Degree from an accredited college (Bachelor Degree preferred)
  • Must Possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Police Officer
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current law enforcement practices and methods
  • Knowledge of court procedures and practices
  • Have the ability to obtain the knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Pleasant Hill Police Department
  • Thorough knowledge of local and state laws as applicable to community law enforcement, use of police department equipment, police vehicles operation, radar equipment, handcuffs, firearms, batons, first aid equipment, stop sticks, hand control remote traffic signals, chemical agents/taser, disorder control tactics, and other related equipment.
  • Have the ability to obtain knowledge of the geographical layout of the City of Pleasant Hill.
  • Ability to perform basic first-aid procedures under practical conditions, varying from minor to major trauma.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.

 

After successfully completing the interview and prior to a conditional offer, the applicant must successfully pass a background investigation.

After being given a conditional offer and prior to appointment, the applicant must:

  • Successfully pass a Physical Examination
  • Successfully pass a Psychological Examination (MMPI)
  • Successfully pass a Polygraph Examination
