HOURLY WAGE: New Hire: $20.54  ·  90 days: $21.58  ·  1 year: $22.80  ·  2 years: $24.03  ·  3 years: $25.33

Plus $0.25/hour shift premium when applicable and $0.25/hour jail premium

Performs work of routine difficulty involving custody and discipline of female prisoners on an assigned shift. Work is performed under general supervision of a Deputy Sheriff – Sergeant.


  • Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis.
  • Receives and books female prisoners, performs searches of female prisoners and receives and inventories all personal property.
  • Dispenses prescribed medication to prisoners.
  • Accompanies female prisoners to court, hospitals and other jurisdictions.
  • Logs incoming and outgoing mail and searches mail for contraband.
  • Distributes and picks up mail, meal trays and laundry.
  • Supervises prisoners working in the kitchen during meal time and during recreational activities.
  • Patrols designated cell blocks or other prison quarters to assure that there are no infringements of the rules.
  • Supervises the personal hygiene of prisoners and the care of their personal property.
  • Takes count of prisoners at prescribed periods.
  • Maintains required records and logs and prepares reports.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned. Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product.
  • Listens to the “Voice of the Customer” and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures manual and prisoners manual.
  • Knowledge of Iowa codes.
  • Ability to learn modern methods of supervising prisoners.
  • Ability to deal effectively with coworkers and prisoners under stressful and/or difficult conditions.
  • Skill in the operation of standard and specialized equipment, computer, typewriter, calculator, control room panels and walkie-talkies.
  • Ability to obtain certification in CPR and first aid and complete Medication Disbursement classes and in-house training courses as required by State Jail Standards.
  • Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment.
  • Regular work attendance required.


  • 12:00 a.m.- 8:00 a.m. Sunday and Monday 
  • 4:00 p.m.- 12:00 a.m. Friday
  •  8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday on 2 floater days, ( 10 day floater notice)
  • Days off: Thursday and Saturday

COVID-19 Precautions

New hire orientation is conducted using social distancing measures and face masks. Temperatures are taken at the beginning of each day for all personnel; this includes new hires. A face mask will be provided to new hires who do not have their own. Face masks will be worn in a manner that covers both the nose and mouth.
