Disease Prevention Specialist

  • Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks. 
  • Researches, reviews and implements regulations, standards or rules related to communicable disease control.
  • Performs public health surveillance activities by reviewing laboratory and other data reports.
  • Completes outreach activities through community engagement of at-risk populations.
  • Initiates and completes investigative procedures involving persons with suspected or confirmed disease or exposure to identify possible source and spread of the infection by interviewing diagnosed case and contacts, e.g. disease reports, animal bites, foodborne illness reports, and suspected outbreaks.
  • Prepares electronic case reports, using approved software applications containing the history of the case and contacts, causative agent, diagnosis, treatment schedules, lab results, contacts; and implements questionnaires to obtain a history of onset and duration of illness, types of symptoms, and history of home, social and work activities, and environmental factors.
  • Navigates consumers to primary health care, as indicated.
  • Reviews and closes case reports in compliance with recommended time frames.
  • Informs and educates health care providers about treatment, prevention, and control methods during disease investigations and outbreaks.
  • Collaborates with the disease surveillance team in ongoing and special immunization programs in order to implement measures to prevent and control the spread of disease; assists in carrying out outreach activities and educational programs to high risk populations.
  • Represents the local health department consistent with agency priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Administrative supervision is received from the Disease Surveillance & Investigations Manager. 
  • Functional supervision is received from the Epidemiologist.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, natural sciences, microbiology or closely related field required; or Bachelor's degree in community health or social work with a minor in natural sciences or epidemiology.
  • One year of experience required; with preference given to applicants with program specific experience.
  • Requires a valid Iowa Driver’s License and be insurable under the County’s guidelines. The position may require the occasional use of private vehicle for official business.
  • Must be available for off-hour and/or weekend activities and overtime if needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Previous experience in the area of public health preferred. 
  • Multilingual skills preferred.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft Windows and other computer software applications.
  • Must maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with members of the general public and co-workers.
  • Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from consumers, professionals and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the healthcare provider network.
  • Must be knowledgeable of local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they apply to the program area.
  • May require additional certification as necessary.
  • Maintains required continuing education credits necessary to perform essential job functions.
