Assists the Disease Surveillance & Investigations Manager in completing disease surveillance activities. Collaborates with staff to monitor, identify and control factors that affect the public’s health.
  • Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks. 
  • Collects and maintains reliable, comparable and valid data to provide information related to population health status.
  • Monitors and analyzes public health data and creates reports that identify trends in health problems, environmental public health hazards and social and economic health factors that affect the public’s health.
  • Informs management to assist with decision-making regarding public health policies, processes, programs and/or interventions. 
  • Serves as the lead in public health emergency preparedness activities. 
  • Provides expertise in the design, management, and evaluation of study protocols and health status questionnaires, sample selection and analysis.
  • Coordinates with staff to conduct and report timely investigations of health problems and environmental health hazards in order to control the spread of disease.
  • Collaborates with Health Department leadership on implementation of the strategic plan, quality improvement plan, and health improvement plan in support of the Agency’s performance management system.
  • Promotes local public health agency to the community through public speaking, use of various media sources and coalition involvement.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to promote best practice, flexibility, high morale and productivity.
  • Collaborates with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) on-site Disease Prevention Specialist, Regional Epidemiologist and Tuberculosis Bureau to investigate communicable diseases.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Supervision is received from Disease Surveillance & Investigations Manager.
  • Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff. 
  • Master’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in epidemiology required. 
  • Must possess a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree or higher with major study in an academic field in epidemiology or related health science field. 
  • Must have a valid Iowa Driver’s License and be insurable under County guidelines. 
  • Must be proficient in web-based computer software applications, database software, Microsoft Office, and other program/reporting applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge of epidemiological methodology, theories, principles and methods. 
  • Knowledgeable with federal and state environmental and communicable disease laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated precision and accuracy throughout the collection, analysis and disease reporting process.
  • Ability to successfully obtain skills in Disease Prevention Services (IDPH).
  • Ability to present and relay information to different audiences including Board of Health and community and professional groups.
  • Ability to analyze and report relevant data, in a timely manner, to monitor population health status. 
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical reports and regulations. 
  •    Ability to make sound decisions under moderate stressful situations.

  • Work is performed primarily in an indoor office setting and requires frequent use of office equipment such as computers, copies, fax machines, telephones. 
  • Position requires frequent use of hand, fingers, arms and near vision
