Senior Application Developer, Orthopedics

Job Information:

UI Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) is seeking a Senior Application Developer to design and/or modify components of complex clinical application systems. This position will work in partnership with Orthopaedic Surgery and Health Care Information Systems.

Core job duties include:
•Act as the Orthopaedic Surgery application development leader. Organize and direct assigned Orthopaedic Surgery and HCIS IT related staff to fulfill project needs. Work in partnership with IT staff, physicians and other related personnel to access needs set IT project priorities.
•Lead clinical and IT resources through the design, build, implementation, validation and maintenance tasks as required to support standard and customized Orthopaedic Surgery needs. Oversee system integration efforts and work to optimize existing setup.
•Lead the coordination of technical project resources and act as an on-site technical project coordinator for all device and software upgrades related to Orthopaedic Surgery utilized applications.
•Develop an operational understanding of critical systems, workflows and policies. Participate in the design and testing of new workflows. Participate in the restructuring of existing workflows as required to enhance application abilities and integration and meet regulatory standards.
•Develop an operational understanding of the systems, tools and policies associated with Orthopaedic Surgery regulatory/governing bodies and reporting registries.
•Participate in the selection process related to Orthopaedic Surgery system purchases. Work with physicians to determine appropriate system needs in conjunction with HCIS to ensure system security, gauge system integration ability with other supported applications, evaluate system query and reporting ability, assess vendor ability to provide support for emergent issues, routine maintenance and system upgrade, and consider the system back-up options offered.
•Maintain skills in data manipulation and reporting. Be able to work effectively with physicians and other non-IT staff to gather reporting requirements. Author queries in Clarity, Epic Reporting Workbench, Crystal Reports, and SQL. Utilize Excel as needed to process data and produce reports. Generate and maintain application level reports. Validate all data produced independently and with subject matter experts. Provide data to the internal and external reporting sources.
•Provide overnight/weekend on-call support and weekday help desk support as assigned by HCIS.

Salary and Benefits:
•$65,000 to commensurate.

Education Required:
•Bachelor’s in Computer Science or MIS or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Experience Required:

•Some current relevant experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non- technical customers to support and enhance business processes.
•typically 5-7 years for Senior Developers that includes technical leadership and experience with programming tools and a comprehensive understanding of database technologies
•Experience contributing to an integrated information system implementation cycle though areas such as design, workflow analysis, build, training, implementation, testing and support
•Demonstrated working or extensive knowledge and ability using programming languages and tools for customizing vendor application software
•Demonstrated working or extensive knowledge and ability working with end-users to define system requirements and understand business needs
•Demonstrated working or extensive knowledge and ability converting business requirements into functional/technical specifications for complex integrated systems build
•Experience communicating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff at the verbal, written and presentation levels
•Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desired Qualifications:
•Experience supporting an EMR in an ambulatory or hospital setting
•Experience with any of the following: ambulatory or inpatient nursing, physician documentation or Orthopedic services
•Epic certification related but not limited to the following: EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient, Optime, Epic Bones
•Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects
•Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management
•Proven ability to write application test scripts
•Experience working with HL7 interfaces
