The Claims Advocate provides assistance and acts as a liaison between clients, claimants and the insurance companies we represent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Function as a liaison between Millhiser Smith, our insureds and insurance carriers regarding customer claim activities.
  • Facilitate and manage claims process: obtain initial claim report, verify coverage, advise clients of procedural steps in resolving claim, follow-up on open claims and assist clients in obtaining favorable outcomes, identify claims that need special follow-up.
  • Use insurance carrier web-based systems to obtain claims data.
  • Assist other departments with service regarding claims activity.
  • Manage claims database.
  • Follow up with carriers on status of open claims.
  • Keep agency informed of changes to reserves. Proactively work with companies on loss reserve status.
  • Provide periodic and year end reporting to the board.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least two years of claims management experience. Should possess strong technical abilities in dealing with commercial and personal lines claims.
  • Iowa Producers license required.
  • College degree and at least two years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Technical education (AIC) helpful and a willingness to continue education is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge in all areas of claims handling with the ability to review, direct and handle the full spectrum of claims from start to finish.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
