Crisis Counselor – GuideLink Mental Health Access Center

POSITION OVERVIEW: This position provides immediate crisis counseling for clients referred to or walking into the GuideLink Center in Iowa City.  Counselors are expected to provide client-centered, trauma-informed counseling, with the goal to de-escalate emotional responses and help the client safety plan.  Crisis Counselors will work closely with staff from the Mobile Crisis Outreach program, as well as community partners such as Abbe Health, Penn Center, Prelude Behavioral Services, Shelter House, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.


Crisis Counseling

  • Counsel  clients who are experiencing a mental health and/or substance abuse crisis.
  • Assist with GuideLink clients experiencing decompensation or re-escalation of crisis.
  • Perform suicide/homicide risk screenings, as well as utilize other assessment measures to determine level of care needed.
  • Provide specialized counseling services in emergency situations (i.e. - suicide, homicide, natural disaster, etc.).
  • Connect clients to long-term supports and other community resources.
  • Train other staff in best practices for crisis counseling/response.

Care Coordination

  • Collaborate with other entities at GuideLink and in the community to provide a continuum of care for the client.
  • Build relationships with community partners and cultivate an understanding of local resources.
  • Debrief with staff after difficult contacts.

Information, Records and Reports

  • Enter contact notes and prepare necessary paperwork for a client’s case file.
  • Assist with compilation and preparation of monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Review client contact reports to determine patterns of need.


  • The ability to be flexible in approaching different situations, and utilizing various counseling styles to meet the needs of the client.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends and overnights to attend staff meetings, training sessions and mobile counseling services in emergencies.
  • Other duties not specifically assigned but required to assist the overall effectiveness of the program.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field and two years of experience in crisis counseling or mental health counseling.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Supervisory and teaching skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, counseling and suicide risk assessment.
  • Valid Iowa driver’s license and insurable under agency liability insurance.
  • Dependable transportation.
  • Must complete 30 hours of department approved training or show proof of prior training within 90 days of hire.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Crisis Intervention with experience in suicide intervention, and postvention.
  • Experience assisting people with relationship difficulties, depression, stress, extreme poverty, acute mental illness, parenting etc.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Previous experience working with victims of crime.
  • Ability to provide services with trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with stressful situations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Ability to write reports and proposals.
  • Fluent in Spanish, Arabic, French or Swahili.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to working with a team of professionals.
  • Personal attributes such as professionalism, commitment to self-improvement and development, friendliness, tact, enthusiasm, creativity, sensitivity, sense of humor, and honesty.

Compensation:  Salary $45,000 - $50,677, depending on experience

Excellent benefit package includes paid vacation and sick leave, 401k retirement plan along with employee health and dental coverage and life/accidental insurance.  Employee copay is required for some plans.

Hours: FT Day shift                  9:00 am – 5:00 pm, various days

            FT Evening shift           4:00 pm – 12:00 am, various days
