Summary of responsibilities
The Sanctuary Choir Director will be responsible for directing the choir as it provides its music ministry during the “traditional” services and occasional special services.
Essential Functions:
The Sanctuary Choir Director is expected to:
  • Select music for the sanctuary choir that is theologically sound and enhances the theme of the day or is complementary to the liturgical season
  • Conduct choir rehearsals, identifying and encouraging the musical gifts of St. Paul’s musicians and fostering preparation so that the music is executed well
  • Direct the choir as it provides its music ministry during the “traditional” services and occasional special services
  • Assist in recruiting special musicians to augment the choir as needed
  • Work with the Coordinator of Music Ministries to budget for music and musicians
  • Participate in occasional worship planning sessions (possibly quarterly)
Further Expectations:
  • The sanctuary choir typically does not rehearse nor sing in worship the six weeksprior to Labor Day nor the Sunday following Christmas
  • The Sanctuary Choir Director shall be granted additional Sundays off per year, scheduled in consultation with the Lead Pastor, after making other arrangements for directing the choir
  • Presence and participation in Christmas and Easter services is required

The Director of Music should exhibit competency in the following areas:
  • Spiritual Maturity: Shows strong personal faith and spiritual grounding; demonstrates an understanding of and an appreciation for United Methodist theology as exhibited in the selection of music and the leadership provided in personal and group settings
  • Musical Training: Has studied and has experience in conducting, in developing and/or maintaining a music program, in selecting and performing sacred music, in working collaboratively with other music leaders
  • Collaborative Leadership: Invites and respects the contributions of others; participates with others in planning
  • Developing Musicians: Provides music leaders and participants with challenging and stretching tasks; holds frequent developmental discussions; is aware of aspirations of others; encourages musicians to accept challenging assignments
