*This person will have the ability to work remotely but MUST live within a reasonable driving distance to the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo areas

The Human Resources (HR) Generalist with work directly with the HRBP and perform human resources related duties at a professional level and may carry out responsibilities in some or all of the following functional areas:  human resource core processes, HR coordination and administration, HRIS system work, communication, training, employee relations, SharePoint site administration, and general HR responsibilities.


The HR Generalist formulates partnerships across assigned UPH business units/division and the Human Resource functions to gain knowledge and understanding, as well as to deliver value added service to the leadership and team members that reflect the business objectives of the organization. This person will be the first point of contact for employee relations issues with the support of the HRBP as needed.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Human Resources Expertise

·        Develops knowledge of general HR practices and technology and HR metrics

·        Understands, follows, and ensures compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policies and provides guidance accordingly

·        Conduct tier one employee relations and grievance resolution meetings; Ensures appropriate document and follow-up is being completed

·        Engage in initial ADA reviews and accommodation discussions

·        Partners with other COE service lines to understand and navigate Human Resource Information Systems and executes HRIS transactions with minimal errors

·        Provide support and training around the core HR processes, such as the annual performance management program, to enable leaders and staff to engage in a meaningful and productive experience


Relationship Management

·        Build trust and credibility with stakeholders

·        Provides outstanding customer service experience to leaders, team members, HRBPs, and other stakeholders

·        Develops a strong and positive reputation both internally and externally as a neutral and approachable HR representative

·        Refers difficult interactions to senior level HR professional

·        Possesses knowledge and understanding of organization’s policy and philosophy toward diversity and inclusiveness

·        Assists with implementation of diversity/culture programs in local settings

·        Provide support in the areas of employee engagement, team building, and new staff assimilation; specifically support areas around the annual employee engagement survey


Basic UPH Performance Criteria        

·        Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

·        Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

·        Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

·        Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

·        Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

·        Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.  Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in human resource management, business or a related field, or equivalent education, training, and experience.





Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Human Resources role and department with strong focus on HR business processes, customer service and service delivery




Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.




A strong aptitude and desire to learn the Human Resource body of knowledge





Work occasionally requires travel to other UnityPoint Health facilities.
