The Senior Recruiter is responsible for developing strategies and providing Human Resources services to Mercy Hospital, Mercy Clinics and affiliated subsidiaries; sourcing, recruitment, and selection of new staff and internal applicants to Mercy Hospital, Mercy Clinics and affiliated subsidiaries and for collaborating with the hiring managers on recruitment strategies. Promotes the Mission, Vision, and Values of Mercy Iowa City.

Job Duties/Performance Expectations (List in order of importance)

  • Develops and implements recruitment strategies using traditional and non-traditional resources, effectively representing Mercy Hospital and market our employer brand.
  • In conjunction with Managers, selects best qualified/suited candidates to create best fit to avoid and reduce turnover.
  • Identifies and recommends sourcing techniques for a variety of positions that includes social media, job boards, university efforts, job fairs/conferences, employee referrals and resume mining for Mercy Hospital and Mercy Clinic applicants. Attend, conduct and organize recruitment events and job fairs.
  • Represents Mercy Hospital and networks through events, relationship building with staffing agencies/headhunters, educational institutions and building pipelines of top talent.
  • Develop working relationships with local nursing programs, agencies, professional groups, and organizations to establish a candidate pipeline.
  • Provides regular (daily or weekly) follow up with respective hiring managers and candidates to ensure timeliness of recruitment process. Provides status updates and metrics to hiring managers and Directors.
  • Identifies recruiting/hiring challenges and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Maintain a database of new talent with referrals.
  • Complete pre-selection screening processes and document. Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) related to qualifications and verifications before hire.
  • Teaches managers effective, legal interviewing and selection approaches. Establishes written protocol for the recruitment process empowering managers to take an active role.
  • Works with Recruiting Assistant and relays information to ensure timely processing of post-offer pre-employment screens and transfer into HRIS system.
  • Assists in the development and revision of Human Resources departmental policies and procedures; participates in ongoing Continuous Quality Improvement process.
  • As time permits, serves on standing and/or ad hoc committees regarding human resources issues.
  • Responsible and accountable for conferring with management and supervisors to identify health care recruiting needs and communicates potential list of healthcare professionals in healthcare setting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received: 

  • Direct supervision is received from the Chief Human Resources Officer. 

Supervision Exercised: 

  • Functional Supervision is exercised over the Human Resouces Recruiter and Recruiting Assistant. 

Equipment & Software Use:

  • General office equipment is used throughout the organization including personal computers, MS Office software, copiers, fax machines and telephones.
  • Audiovisual and educational resources; (e.g., video players, etc.).



  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience. 

Related Experience 

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Recruiting 
  • Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills are required. 
  • Healthcare experience.
