Manager, Human Resources

Job Information:

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by managing Human Resources functions including employee relations, HRIS, workers compensation, leave management, accreditation, special events and support services. This position involves significant interaction with employees at all levels of the organization. In addition, the position will work closely with the Director, Human Resources in developing, implementing and evaluating ongoing HR policies, programs, functions and activities.
Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
  • Develops goals and objectives in employee relations, leave management, workers compensation, reasonable accommodation requests and recognition programs and events. Plans, organizes and directs Human Resources activities in these areas and ensures staff deliver quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.
  • Advises Mercy Medical Center and MercyCare Community Physician managers on performance management and behavioral issues, recommending appropriate corrective action steps and participating in such discussions. Ensures a consistent approach is taken and consults with Director , Human Resources and legal counsel as needed.
  • Promotes a positive work environment by serving as a resource for employees to voice their concerns. Partners with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale and increase employee productivity and retention. Demonstrates exceptional ability with employee relations issues.
  • Leads internal investigations on a variety of employee and managerial complaints, recommends solutions and assists with facilitation of resolution.
  • Oversees Human Resources compliance in accordance with accreditation and regulatory requirements. Maintains and implements processes, procedures, projects to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Oversees and evaluates new employee onboarding and orientation programs. Oversees Human Resources department reception desk and telephone services ensuring appropriate staff coverage and exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Oversees the coordination of initiatives to reduce the incidence and severity of Workers’ Compensation claims, including working collaboratively with Employee Health and the insurance carrier .
  • Develops, recommends, implements and evaluates human resources policies and procedures. Prepares and maintains employee handbook.
  • Serves as Functional Systems Administrator for HRIS application.
  • Complies with and administers Human Resources-related local, state and federal laws, regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Files EEO-1 annually.
  • Assumes Director , Human Resources duties in absence of Director .
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills required, including the ability to interact with tact and diplomacy in both written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of effective human resources practices and employment and labor law required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Advanced computer skills required.
  • Role models exemplary customer service skills and creates a welcoming environment for all team members.
Professional Experience– Required vs. Preferred
  • Five years of human resources or related experience required.
  • Human resources generalist and/or employee relations experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory and healthcare experience preferred.
Education-Required vs. Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred
  • Human Resources certification preferred.

  • Supervised By: Director, Human Resources
  • Supervises: Workers Compensation Specialist, Employee Leave Administrator, Project Coordinator-HR, Human Resources Assistant
