This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care through participation in the interdisciplinary team. The Paramedic performs designated procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse as well as responding to ever changing and emergent situations within the unit
 
Job Duties
  • Practices standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of medication purpose, side effects and administration procedure.
  • Administers oral, IV, SubQ and IM medications.
  • Instructs patients as directed by the RN or physician.
  • Prepares patient for physician exam.
  • Escribes orders.
  • Collects health history and medication list.
  • Manages room turnover and patient flow.
  • Performs accurate measurement of patient statistics to include vitals, height and weight.
  • Functions under the general supervision/direction of a supervising RN/Physician and is responsible for facilitating the provision of patient care which is goal directed.
Department Specific Duties
  • Administers injections as needed.
     
  • Supervises stresss testing as needed.  Assists cardiology imaging departments with injections, stress test supervision and documentation.
  • Receives, greets and triages patients in person or on telephone.  Schedules appointments, answers questions and/or determines the need for provder intervention.
  • Supports an assigned provider's practice and acts as liaison between the provider and his/her patients.  Assists provider to remain on schedule with appointments.
  • Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list. Enters information into EHR.
  • Processes medication requests/changes/refills per established protocols. This includes having knowledge of medications, including basic dosages, side effects and interactions.
  • Provides assistance with diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the provider. This includes obtaining specimens, labeling and disposition to the laboratory and explaining diagnostic procedures to patient as needed.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room as directed by provider. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Sound background in emergency medical care.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide safe and effective patient care.
Professional Experience
  • Previous patient care/paramedic experience preferred.
Education
  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure.     
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Required: Currently licensed to practice as an EMT-Paramedic in the state of Iowa.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.  Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
  • Required: Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in accordance with the American Heart Association.
Physical Demand Requirements
  • Heavy: Exert 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently

Location: Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids · Mercy Cardiology Clinic
Schedule: Full Time, Day, Four 9 hour day shifts 7:30am - 4pm. Tuesdays off with weekend call rotation 7pm-5pm
